We were grateful for shade on our last trip to Abbotsbury Subtropical gardens before we finish for the summer. Abbotsbury Explorers used mallets to press petals onto paper to make colourful patterns. Carrying scissors and a bag to collect fallen leaves we then set off to a part of the gardens we rarely get to.
After the initial downpour at the swannery, the weather brightened allowing the children to ride on the go-karts, talk to the man and admired the walking sticks he makes, sit in nests and make nests using salt dough and other materials. It was all about trying to keep cool this week. Fortunately children automatically seek shade, and when there wasn’t any they helped to create it. From picking berries to feed the birds, making dens, painting the wall, and playing with water. Bringing the ride-on toys inside the children re-enacted traffic congestion in Abbotsbury.
As the children arrived at Abbotsbury Explorers they were encouraged to paint a colour wheel. Whilst this dried they used a smaller colour wheel and colour sheet to mark off the colours they could find, and went off in their groups to explore Abbotsbury gardens.
